Effective - field theories for the = 52 quantum Hall edge state

چکیده
The quantum Hall state at the filling fraction =5 /2 is the leading candidate to be a physical system supporting excitations with non-Abelian braid statistics. While a direct experimental evidence for the latter is still absent, recent experiments by Radu et al. I. P. Radu, J. B. Miller, C. M. Marcus, M. A. Kastner, L. N. Pfeiffer, and K. W. West, Science 320, 899 2008 yielded results favoring some previously proposed nonAbelian theories over Abelian ones. Here, we systematically investigate candidate theories of the quantum Hall edge at the filling fraction =5 /2. We find a set of candidate theories, both Abelian and non-Abelian, which are equally consistent with the experimental data and cannot therefore be distinguished in the quasihole tunneling experiment only. We discuss what experimental information may be useful in resolving the ambiguity.

Starting from recently proposed bosonic mean field theories for fully and partially polarized quantum Hall states, we construct corresponding effective low energy theories for the edge modes. The requirements of gauge symmetry and invariance under global O(3) spin rotations, broken only by a Zeeman coupling, imply boundary conditions that allow for edge spin waves. In the generic case, these mo...

We briefly review these low-energy effective theories for the quantum Hall effect, with emphasis and language familiar to field theorists. Two models have been proposed for describing the most stable Hall plateaus (the Jain series): the multi-component Abelian theories and the minimal W1+∞ models. They both lead to a-priori classifications of quantum Hall universality classes. Some experiments ...
متن کاملQuasi-particles in Fractional Quantum Hall Effect Edge Theories
We propose a quasi-particle formulation of effective edge theories for the fractional quantum Hall effect. For the edge of a Laughlin state with filling fraction ν = 1 m , our fundamental quasi-particles are edge electrons of charge −e and edge quasi-holes of charge + e m . These quasi-particles satisfy exclusion statistics in the sense of Haldane. We exploit algebraic properties of edge electr...

We consider the possible role that chiral orbifold conformal field theories may play in describing the edge state theories of quantum Hall systems. This is a generalization of work that already exists in the literature, where it has been shown that 1+1 chiral bosons living on a n-dimensional torus, and which couple to a U1 gauge field, give rise to anomalous electric currents, the anomaly being...
